How to Set Up a New Windows Laptop for Optimal Performance
Get your new Windows laptop running smoothly from day one. This guide covers initial setup, removing bloatware, and configuring performance settings.
Overview
Most new Windows laptops come with unnecessary software (bloatware) and default settings that prioritise marketing over performance. This guide helps you remove bloatware and set up a fast, secure system in under an hour.
Step 1: Initial Setup
First boot configuration and account creation.
Power On and Language Selection
Press the power button and select your region, language, and keyboard layout. Choose UK English if you're in the UK.
Network Connection
Connect to Wi-Fi when prompted. Windows 11 requires internet for initial setup. If setting up for a business, consider using Ethernet for a more stable connection.
Microsoft Account vs Local Account
Windows will push you to create/sign in with a Microsoft account. For better privacy and control:
- Personal use: Microsoft account is fine (enables OneDrive, sync across devices)
- Business use: Create a local account for better control
- To create local account: Click "Sign-in options" → "Domain join instead" → "Limited experience"
Privacy Settings
Windows will ask about privacy settings. Recommendations:
- Location: Off (unless you need it)
- Diagnostic data: Required only
- Inking & typing: Off
- Advertising ID: Off
- Activity history: Off
Step 2: Remove Bloatware
Manufacturers pre-install unnecessary software that slows down your laptop. Remove it immediately.
Uninstall Pre-installed Apps
Press Windows key + I → Apps → Installed apps. Uninstall:
- Manufacturer utilities (HP Support Assistant, Lenovo Vantage, etc.) – install only if needed later
- Third-party antivirus trials (McAfee, Norton) – Windows Defender is sufficient
- Candy Crush, Disney+, and other games/apps you won't use
- Manufacturer "optimization" tools – they rarely help
Disable Startup Programs
Right-click Taskbar → Task Manager → Startup tab. Disable everything except:
- Windows Security notifications
- Critical manufacturer utilities (graphics card control panels)
- Apps you actually use daily
Step 3: Optimise Windows Settings
Disable Visual Effects
Search "Performance" → "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" → Select "Adjust for best performance" or custom select:
- Keep: "Smooth edges of screen fonts" (for readability)
- Keep: "Show thumbnails instead of icons"
- Disable everything else for maximum performance
Configure Storage Sense
Settings → System → Storage → Turn on Storage Sense. Configure:
- Run Storage Sense: Every month
- Delete files in Recycle Bin: After 30 days
- Delete files in Downloads: After 60 days (or Never if you prefer)
Disable Windows Animations
Settings → Accessibility → Visual effects → Toggle off "Animation effects"
Step 4: Security Setup
Windows Update
Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Install all available updates and restart if needed. This is critical for security.
Enable Windows Security
Search "Windows Security" → Ensure all protections are ON:
- Virus & threat protection: Real-time protection ON
- Firewall: ON for all network types
- App & browser control: SmartScreen ON
Set Up BitLocker (Pro only)
If you have Windows Pro, enable BitLocker drive encryption:
- Search "BitLocker" → Turn on BitLocker for C: drive
- Save recovery key to Microsoft account or print it
- Encrypt used disk space only (faster initial encryption)
Step 5: Configure Performance Modes
Power Plan Settings
Search "Power plan" → Choose a power plan → Change plan settings:
- Plugged in: High performance (or Balanced)
- On battery: Power saver or Balanced
- Change advanced settings → Set "Turn off hard disk after" to Never when plugged in
Graphics Settings
For gaming or creative work: Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings → Turn on "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling"
Step 6: Install Essential Software
Install only what you actually need. Here are the essentials:
Browser
While Edge is decent, install Chrome, Firefox, or Brave if you prefer. Set it as default browser.
Essential Tools
- 7-Zip: Free file compression (better than WinRAR)
- VLC Media Player: Plays all media formats
- PDF Reader: Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit
- Office Suite: Microsoft 365, LibreOffice, or Google Workspace
Optional Performance Tools
- CCleaner: Disk cleanup (use sparingly, not needed with Storage Sense)
- MSI Afterburner: GPU monitoring (for gaming)
- HWInfo: Hardware monitoring
