How to Install and Configure a Wireless Mouse or Keyboard
Complete guide to pairing Bluetooth devices, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and maximising battery life for wireless peripherals.
Overview
Wireless mice and keyboards connect via Bluetooth or USB receivers. This guide covers both connection methods, common problems, and battery optimisation.
Step 1: Bluetooth Pairing
Most modern wireless devices use Bluetooth for connection.
Prepare the Device
Insert batteries or charge the device. Locate the pairing button (usually on the bottom or side). Some devices automatically enter pairing mode when first turned on.
Windows Pairing
- Press Windows key + I → Bluetooth & devices
- Ensure Bluetooth is On
- Click "Add device" → Bluetooth
- Press and hold the pairing button on your mouse/keyboard until the LED flashes
- Select your device from the list when it appears
- Wait for "Connected" confirmation
macOS Pairing
- Apple menu → System Settings → Bluetooth
- Ensure Bluetooth is On
- Press and hold the pairing button on your device
- Click "Connect" when your device appears in the list
- Wait for "Connected" status
Test the Connection
Move the mouse or type on the keyboard to verify it works. If there's lag or no response, try re-pairing or check battery levels.
Step 2: USB Receiver Setup
Some wireless devices use a USB receiver instead of Bluetooth.
Install the USB Receiver
Insert the USB receiver (small dongle) into an available USB port on your computer. Most receivers are plug-and-play - no drivers needed.
Power On the Device
Turn on your mouse or keyboard. Most devices connect automatically to the receiver within seconds. Look for an LED indicator that stops blinking when connected.
Install Software (If Needed)
Some manufacturers provide software for advanced features:
- Logitech: Logitech Options or G HUB
- Microsoft: Mouse and Keyboard Centre
- Razer: Razer Synapse
Only install if you need to customise buttons, DPI settings, or RGB lighting.
Step 3: Troubleshooting Common Issues
Device Won't Pair
- Ensure batteries are fresh or device is charged
- Move device closer to computer (within 1 metre)
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again on your computer
- Restart your computer
- Remove and re-insert batteries to reset the device
Lag or Stuttering
- Check battery levels - replace if low
- Move USB receiver to a different port (closer to device)
- Remove metal objects or other wireless devices between mouse and receiver
- Update device drivers in Device Manager (Windows)
- Disable USB power saving: Device Manager → USB Root Hub → Power Management → Uncheck "Allow computer to turn off this device"
Cursor Jumps or Freezes
- Clean the sensor on the bottom of the mouse with a dry cloth
- Use a mouse pad (especially on glass or glossy surfaces)
- Check for software conflicts - close background apps
- Try a different USB port
Device Disconnects Randomly
- Replace batteries or recharge device
- Disable Windows power saving for Bluetooth: Device Manager → Bluetooth → Properties → Power Management → Uncheck power saving
- Re-pair the device completely (unpair first, then pair again)
- Update Bluetooth drivers from manufacturer's website
Step 4: Battery Life Tips
Extend Battery Life
- Turn off devices when not in use for extended periods
- Use rechargeable batteries for better value and environment
- Reduce RGB lighting intensity or disable it (gaming mice/keyboards)
- Enable auto-sleep mode if available in device settings
- Keep devices away from extreme temperatures
Monitor Battery Levels
Most wireless devices show battery status via:
- LED indicators (green = good, red = low)
- System Settings (Windows: Bluetooth & devices → Your device)
- Manufacturer software (Logitech Options, etc.)
Disposal and Replacement
Dispose of batteries properly at recycling centres. Never throw batteries in regular rubbish. When replacing batteries, use the same type and brand for consistent performance.
