How to Fix Audio Issues on Video Calls
Solve common audio problems in Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. Fix microphone, speaker, echo, and sound quality issues quickly.
Overview
Audio problems are the most common video call issues. This guide covers quick fixes for microphone and speaker problems, echo issues, and platform-specific settings.
Step 1: Quick Fixes (Try These First)
Check Mute Button
- Look for microphone icon in call window
- Red slash or line means you're muted
- Click icon to unmute
- Check both app mute and headset mute button (if applicable)
Some headsets have physical mute buttons. Check cable or ear cup for inline controls that may be muting your microphone.
Test With Test Call
- Zoom: Settings → Audio → Test Speaker and Test Mic
- Teams: Settings → Devices → Make a test call
- Google Meet: meet.google.com/test → Check camera and audio
- Speak into microphone and verify you hear playback
Check Default Audio Devices
- Windows: Right-click speaker icon → Sounds → Playback/Recording tabs
- Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input/Output
- Verify correct microphone and speakers selected
- Green tick/checkmark shows default device
- Right-click device → Set as Default (Windows)
Restart the Application
- Completely quit Zoom/Teams/Meet (not just close window)
- Windows: Right-click taskbar icon → Quit
- Mac: Cmd+Q to fully quit app
- Reopen and rejoin call
- App often redetects audio devices on restart
Check Physical Connections
- Unplug and replug USB headset or microphone
- Verify 3.5mm jacks in correct ports (pink=mic, green=headphones)
- Try different USB port if using USB device
- Check Bluetooth connection if using wireless headset
Step 2: Microphone Not Working
Grant Microphone Permissions
Windows:
- Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
- Enable "Microphone access"
- Enable "Let apps access your microphone"
- Scroll down and enable for specific apps (Zoom, Teams, Chrome)
Mac:
- System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone
- Enable checkboxes for Zoom, Teams, Chrome, etc.
- Quit and restart apps after enabling
Check Microphone Levels
- Windows: Right-click speaker icon → Sounds → Recording tab
- Double-click microphone → Levels tab
- Set level to 80-100%
- Speak and watch green bars move
- If no movement, microphone may be faulty
Select Correct Microphone in App
- Zoom: Settings → Audio → Microphone dropdown
- Teams: Settings → Devices → Microphone dropdown
- Google Meet: Settings (gear icon) → Audio → Microphone
- Try each available option if multiple listed
- Look for device name (e.g., "Logitech USB Headset")
If you have built-in mic, USB headset, and webcam mic, computer may select wrong one. Always manually select desired device in app settings.
Disable Automatic Gain Control
- Windows: Sound → Recording → Microphone Properties
- Advanced tab → Uncheck "Enable audio enhancements"
- Zoom/Teams: Audio settings → Disable "Automatically adjust microphone"
- Manual levels often work better than automatic
Update Audio Drivers
- Windows: Device Manager → Audio inputs and outputs
- Right-click microphone → Update driver
- Select "Search automatically for drivers"
- Restart computer after updates
Step 3: Can't Hear Others
Check System Volume
- Click speaker icon in taskbar/menu bar
- Verify volume is above 50%
- Check app volume mixer (Windows: right-click speaker → Open Volume mixer)
- Ensure Zoom/Teams not muted in mixer
Select Correct Speaker/Output
- Zoom: Settings → Audio → Speaker dropdown
- Teams: Settings → Devices → Speaker dropdown
- Select headphones, external speakers, or laptop speakers
- Click "Test" to hear test sound
Ask Others to Unmute
- Use chat to ask if others are muted
- Host can unmute participants in some apps
- Check participant list for mute indicators
- Test with different person if available
Fix Echo Issues
- Echo caused by speaker sound feeding back into microphone
- Solution 1: Use headphones instead of speakers
- Solution 2: Lower speaker volume
- Solution 3: Move microphone farther from speakers
- Enable echo cancellation in app settings if available
Headphones are the best solution for echo. Even cheap earbuds prevent feedback better than the best speaker setup.
Step 4: App-Specific Settings
Zoom Audio Settings
- Settings → Audio
- Enable "Automatically join audio by computer when joining a meeting"
- Check "Mute my microphone when joining a meeting" if you prefer
- Advanced: Enable "Show in-meeting option to Enable Original Sound"
- Suppress background noise: Low, Medium, High, or Auto
Microsoft Teams Audio Settings
- Settings → Devices
- Select Audio devices from dropdowns
- Enable "Noise suppression" (Auto recommended)
- Disable "Secondary ringer" unless needed
- Make test call to verify settings
Google Meet Audio Settings
- In meeting, click three dots → Settings
- Audio tab → Select microphone and speakers
- Enable "Noise cancellation" for better quality
- Browser permissions: Chrome → Site settings → Microphone/Camera
Browser Audio Permissions
For web-based calls (Google Meet, Zoom in browser):
- Chrome: Click padlock icon → Site settings
- Set Microphone and Camera to "Allow"
- Refresh page and rejoin call
- Check browser isn't muted (right-click browser tab)
When All Else Fails
- Try different device (phone instead of computer)
- Test different headset or microphone
- Check internet connection (poor connection causes audio issues)
- Update Zoom/Teams/Meet to latest version
- Restart computer (clears temporary audio glitches)
If microphone works in other apps but not video calls, it's software. If it doesn't work anywhere, microphone may be physically broken.
